What is Santacruzan?

The Santacruzan is a religious procession held in many parts of the Philippines during the month of May. It commemorates the journey of Queen Helena (Reyna Elena) of Constantinople to the Holy Land to find the True Cross and the subsequent celebrations in Rome. It features a procession of sagalas (queens) representing virtues, Marian titles and biblical figures, often merging cultural beauty with religious devotion.

The Day’s Schedule

Holy Mass & Devotion: We begin with a Mass, followed by an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

The Procession: A grand parade featuring the Sagalas in their stunning gowns and Barong Tagalogs. We will walk whilst reciting the Rosary and singing Marian hymns, accompanied by floral arcs and statues of Mother Mary.

The Crowning & Offering: The procession concludes at the Friary lawn, where we will perform the Crowning of Mother Mary and offer flowers at her statue.

Cultural Programme: Celebrate our roots with the Philippine National Anthem, followed by a lively program of food, games, and performances.

How to Participate in the Sagala:

We invite children and young adults to join the procession as Sagalas. Participants typically wear traditional Filipino attire—gowns for girls and Barong Tagalogs or suits for boys—and represent titles of Mother Mary with designated sashes.

Registration is required to join the Sagala.
